Hispanic Latino Affinity Network

There are more than 37,000 Hispanic or Latino residents living in the nine mountain and foothill
counties that make up the Blue Ridge District, according to the US Census Bureau. These folks
represent a diversity of cultural/ethnic origins. About 55% - 60% identify Mexican as their
primary Hispanic/Latino background; 10% identify as Puerto Rican heritage; and another 15%
are of a Central American background like Salvadoran, Honduran, and Guatemalan.

Many of these folks remain isolated from the mainstream due to language barriers, fear and other
factors; and very few are participating members of United Methodist churches in the Blue Ridge

The purpose of the Hispanic/Latino Affinity Network is to connect folks across the District who
have a passion for bridging the divide between our UMC churches and Hispanic/Latino
